Every summer the small Swiss town of Vercorin offers up its public spaces and buildings to artists to make do with them what they will. R&Art, the association behind the initiative, commissions contemporary works that seek to engage the village as a whole in an effort to reconcile Vercorin’s history and traditions with contemporary culture. Lang/Baumann‘s “Street Painting #5″ is a stunning testament to the strength of the villagers’ goal to create “spaces for dialogues in synch with our times.

The painting encompasses the full width of the village, shooting outwards from the central town square down multiple side streets and alleys. Brightly colored diverging lines thread their way through the town and overlap at several points, creating intertwining forms which contrast with the neat, tidy urban edges. Standing in the middle of the square, the lines seemingly extend out into infinity, while from above–an impossible viewpoint afforded only to birds and passing aircraft–they seemingly form a map for some fictional subway system, albeit one realized on a micro-level where every address, cafe, and town landmark has its own train stop.

According to the artists, who spoke to My Modern Met about the painting, construction of the work was opened up to the community, with villagers helping to lay down and paint the lines on the village streets. When it was finished, the town “used it [the work] in a very playful way…especially the children used it to cycle or skate or walk on the lines.”

If you’re a fan of experimental technology, Arduino hacking or post-modern music, this project is going to make you smile. Years is a piece by Bartholomäus Traubeck, and it consists of a record player that plays slices of wood.

Yep, you read that right.As you probably know, you can estimate how old a tree is by counting the rings across its trunk. This record player reads that “ring data” and translates it into music. More specifically, the tree’s year rings are analyzed for strength, thickness and growth rate. All of these details affect the final sound.

From the creator:"This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture).The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently."

As you’ll see in the video below, Years utilizes a wooden disk created out of a finely sliced tree trunk. It is similar in thickness and shape to a traditional record. And instead of the typical needle you’d find on most record players, it’s been replaced by a hacked PS Eye Camera.The resulting music is eerie and a bit whimsical. There’s a definite pattern present, and cracks or knots in the wood yield a particularly disruptive response.The idea of turning something physical into music creates a new sonic identity.

It would be very interesting to apply the same idea as technique for reading other objects too, and the technique of mapping things like color to specific notes or chords could become an awesome inspiration tool for musicians!

"Wooden Textiles" convey a new tactile experience. We are used to experience wood as a hard material; we know the feeling of walking across wooden floors, to touch a wooden tabletop or to feel the bark of a tree. But we usually don't experience a wooden surface which can be manipulated by touch.

"Wooden Textiles" is a material that is half wood-half textile, between hard and soft, challenging what can be expected from a material or category. It looks and smells familiar but feels strange, as it is able to move and form in unexpected ways.

The processes to transform wood into a flexible wooden surface is its deconstruction into pieces, which are then attached to a textile base. Depending on the geometry and size of the tiles each design shows a different behavior regarding flexibility and mobility. There are various possible applications, for example as floorings, curtains, drapes, plaids, upholstery or parts of furniture.

I believe that one of the main reasons I enjoy the paper craft, is due to my love of the material: paper. Although I've always had a special fascination for paper, it has taken me a while to find my own way of working with it; and then it took a little longer to find out that the technique I have been using so intensively is called quilling - it involves the use of strips of paper that can be rolled, shaped, and glued to the background. This artwork is the first piece in the series of works which I consider a declaration of love to the material and the technique. It is also an attempt to raise a profile of this paper craft, which has been previously regarded with some disdain, and to bring this type of artwork on a new level in terms of its ability to convey meaning and emotions. Initially, I was concerned about the limitations of the quilling technique and the material from which the work is constructed - paper & card - as it very much dictates what can and cannot be said within the boundaries of the chosen medium. However, this material limitation turned out to be a strength for me: there is the potential to contain thoughts and ideas in unique ways so that the medium can become a significant part of the message. Thus, after working with paper quilling for over three years I am at a point where I don't feel constrained by the technical challenges of the medium; I'm eager to keep experimenting, and this piece is just a beginning. I t would be difficult to avoid mentioning one of the questions I am often being asked about my commercial paper works, which is, 'How long does it take'. Obviously this work took a lot longer than any of the commercial works I've done so far. In this laborious work the process has also become important: to my opinion, spending endless hours and days on a piece of work gives the suggestion of great care; not in vain the notion of 'care' is implied in the word 'to craft' itself. Being a three dimensional object, the artwork offers multiple views depending on the angle of perception and the intensity and direction of lighting. These things can drastically change the visual experiences and emotional message of the same artwork. The rough snaps below should not only help to see some work in progress stages, but also demonstrate the versatility that can be achieved by playing with lighting and angles.

“Orishiki” is a hybrid word composed of “Ori ”, taken f rom Origami, Japanese paper-folding art, and “Shiki ” taken f rom Furoshiki, Japanese traditional wrapping cloth which is large enough to wrap and transport goods and gifts, as well as wearing them as scarves. “ORISHIKI” is a new carrying device consisting of a single piece of two dimensional structure, constructed of triangular segments which can be folded like origami, and can wrap things like furoshiki. The geometric bag is not only idiosyncratic in its appearance but also in its highly specialized production process. The unique process can be applied to just about any productions without losing its unique product identity.

The Orishiki is not same as any another luggage system geometric and lovely shape.
The material and system are also quite unique which is way combined folding and swallowing up volume inside.

There is big possibility of many way to use the system on many different type of luggage in the future.

Here is a totally cool backpack that goes by the name of SEIL Bag. It’s a backpack meant for cyclists and features an LED Display (flexible PCB) on its face. The bag is designed to work in two modes: Driving Mode and Emotion Mode. In the Driving Mode it shows left and right turn signals for the rider, which is controlled via a detachable controller. This makes it easy for the following traffic to know the riders intent. The cool-quotient is upped with the Emotion Mode; here you can display a variety of emoticons, just for the heck of it.

The bag also displays brake signal, cruse signal and emergency signal; the acceleration sensor detects speed and turns on stop signal automatically. The signals can be controlled intuitively; pushing the lever up, turns on left turn signal and vice versa.

A very classy bag with a lot of use, I really dig the emoticon aspect!

Robot shaped homemade cookies!

It was one of those ideas that came down in a funneling flood of light and entered my head to a chorus of angelic voices: Silicon ice trays. Silicon muffin pans. Wait a minute—I bet I can bake things in silicon ice trays!

‘Twas a grand experiment, and after pulling hair out of my head with my doughy fingers and amputating many a droid, whole robots began to emerge out of the Artificial Intelligence Ice Cube Tray I’d re-purposed.

Next time around, I’ll use ice trays with fewer small parts, such as the Squirming With Delight Ice Cube Tray or Fishing for Cube-liments Tray, and settle on a cookie that doesn’t involve chunky parts. But in the end, my non-store-’bot’, orange-chocolate chip cookie robots emerged successfully, ready to be devoured!

American firm Choi + Shine Architects recently received the 2010 Boston Society of Architects Award for Unbuilt Architecture for their project “The Land Of Giants”, which they originally designed for the Icelandic High Voltage Electrical Pylon Competition back in 2008.

Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed pylon design, the architects created a series of towers that are powerful, solemn and variable. The pylon-figures can be configured to respond to their environment with appropriate gestures.
